The application opens Monday, July 6, 2026, at 8 a.m. PT and closes Monday, August 31, 2026, at 5 p.m. PT.
There are six components to the application:
- Online application
- Resume
- Personal statement
- Essay
- Two letters of recommendation (one professional and one academic)
- Unofficial transcript
In the online application, you will submit all materials (items 2-6) in the listed order as one PDF document. The prompts for the personal statement and essay will be available when the application opens.
- Recommendation letters can be addressed to: AFP Selection Committee
- Letters of recommendation should ideally be included within the applicant’s single PDF submission. However, if a recommender prefers to submit their letter separately, they may send it directly to the appropriate regional fellowship email address. Southern CA: scal.kp-fellowship@kp.org or Northern California: ncal.kp-fellowship@kp.org.
Once a candidate’s application packet and all required materials have been received, the application will be reviewed after the deadline. We do not review on a rolling basis.
Prospective candidates will advance through 3 interview rounds. The first and second rounds will be held virtually and candidates selected for the final round will be invited to Pleasanton, CA for NCAL interviews or Pasadena, CA for SCAL interviews. Interview format will primarily consist of behavioral style and case-based questions.
A final decision will be made by late September or early October.
To apply to both Northern California and Southern California, be sure to select both regions on the application. You are only required to submit a single application, even if you are applying to both regions. You will be required to rank your preference of region on the application. The regions will use this information if you advance to the final round. Final round interviews are granted to only one region.
The start date of the fellowship is typically July, with potential for an earlier start date in June. All fellows must begin by August 1. Subsequent rotations are flexible and the transition between rotations may vary depending on a fellow’s work assignments. Please note that all Southern California fellows must start in July.
Fellows receive support from the executive sponsors, the program director, facility preceptors, and fellow alumni, who provide guidance and career advice throughout the program.
Yes, fellows have the opportunity to rotate within all three entities.
